There is an alert for a possible tsunami hitting the country, which follows the magnitude of 8.8 earthquake that hit Chile, this was officially stated by the PHIVOLCS or the Philippine Institue of Volcanology and Seismology. The residents who lived in the Eastern coastline of the country must monitor news report on the possible tsunami originated by the Chile earthquake. The one's exposed to tsunami from the pacific would be the Eastern coastline of the country, stated by PHIVOLCS Director Mr. Renato Solidum.
The issued tsunami alert is around 3:10 pm or less than 40 minutes after the earthquake strike in chile, the standard operating procedure for the PHILVOCS. Solidum also said that it is best for the public to be prepared and be reminded that there was a powerful earthquake in another part of the world that could result a tsunami. He also remember, back in 1960, a magnitude of 9.5 earthquake, the vigorous earthquake ever recorded, strike chile and resulted waves, as high as 6 meters to attain the country 24 hours later. Though, solidum clearly stated that PHIVOLCS, has not yet issued any warning signal for evacuation of the coastal regions. Tsunami may be low as one mwter, but it is the volume of the water coming in that will determine the impact of the waves. Solidum clarify that the present twin mindanao and 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on saturday morning was not related with chile earthquake.
